About this Exam
The HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate (004) validates that you understand infrastructure as code and can apply Terraform in a day-to-day workflow. The exam is organized into nine objectives: IaC concepts (5-7%), the purpose of Terraform versus other IaC tools (7-9%), Terraform basics (10-12%), the CLI outside the core workflow (8-10%), modules (8-10%), the core workflow (8-10%), state management (12-15%), reading, generating and modifying configuration (15-18%), and HCP Terraform capabilities (8-10%). It is deliberately practical: you are expected to know what a command does, what ends up in state, and which HCL construct solves a described problem, rather than recite marketing definitions. Coverage spans providers and version constraints, init/plan/apply, backends and state locking, drift and import, variables and outputs, meta-arguments such as count, for_each, depends_on and lifecycle, dynamic blocks and built-in functions, module sources and versioning, and the workspace, run and private registry features of HCP Terraform. Exam Tips
Configuration (15-18%) and state (12-15%) are the two heaviest objectives — budget your study time there first
Know precisely what each CLI command touches: which ones read state, which ones write it, and which ones contact the provider
Be able to distinguish count from for_each, and know when depends_on is genuinely required versus implied by a reference
State questions favour real operational detail — locking, backend migration, terraform state mv/rm, and how drift is detected on plan
The exam is only 60 minutes, so pace yourself; flag anything slow and come back rather than stalling
HCP Terraform questions focus on workspaces, remote runs, variable sets and the private registry — know what the cloud block changes
